April 1853: Date of birth of Tidad (Trinidad Lopez y Crisostomo Talentin) - grandmother of Imelda Romualdez Marcos. She was the eldest of eight children fathered out of wedlock by Father Francisco Lopez. A native of Grenada, the Franciscan priest was sent to be the spiritual leader of Basey parish on the island of Samar in central Philippines. His love was Concepcion Talentin, a child by one of his predecessors. They lived in sin for thirty-four years. When he was in his sixties, Father Lopez was again transferred to far away Pandacan (in Manila). He left Concepcion behind but took his children for schooling.

At nineteeen, Tidad wanted to be a nun but was barred because she was illegitimate. She earned her keep sweeping the parish church, where one day her confessor suggested an alternative: "She could marry somebody about to die and make the poor fellow happy, then she would be a widow, which was more acceptable socially than being an illegitimate child." He had in mind Daniel Romualdez (also from a mestizo family) - an unemployed schoolteacher at twenty-one who was dying of tuberculosis and had come to pray for a miracle. The miracle he had in mind was that the girl sweeping the floor would marry him. So he spoke to the priest, and the miracle was arranged.

"To cure his illness, Tidad took him to Leyte to live with her mother. When he failed to die, and lived to a ripe old age, making her pregnant repeatedly in the process, Tidad concluded that it was all part of the male conspiracy." (Source: The Marcos Dynasty [1988] by Sterling Seagrave, pp 49-50)

January 1, 1984: Brunei's 29th sultan in his royal line announced the ending of 19th-century agreements by which Britain had controlled defense and foreign affairs. Despite a heavy downpour, merdeka (independence) was celebrated by about 30,000 dignitaries and well-wishers.

[Those who want more slice of the pie either don't know the consequences of having greedy middlemen or they want to become representatives themselves.]

Within one week of Diana, Princess of Wales' divorce from Prince Charles: Editor - I had read an opinion column at the back of a newspaper that was derogatory against the Princess as if she was a nobody. So I phoned the writer and told him among other things, "YOU JUST WAIT UNTIL PRINCE WILLIAM BECOMES KING AND PRINCESS DIANA BECOMES THE QUEEEN MOTHER! YOU JUST WAIT." And then I hung up. Now I regret making that phone call.
